Historically,  proteolytic enzymes have been used to suport weight loss and a healthy immune system. There is simply too much information to include here on pancreatic enzymes.Pardon us for crowing, but we have simply the best enzyme on the market, bar none. NO ONE makes an enzyme with as much α-chymotrypsin (an extremely potent and long-lived proteolytic enzyme) as we do. In the past enzymes were best delivered in tablet form. Since stomach acid is highly destructive to pancreatic enzymes and to many plant source enzymes and since capsules were quickly broken down in the stomach, the use of capsules with enzymes was until fairly recently a bad idea. For most nutrients, passing through the stomach does no harm and in some cases is helpful and even necessary, but it is not good for most enzymes. Since until fairly recently capsules could not be effectively enteric coated, any enzyme formula in a capsule form was likely to be of a greatly diminished value even if it was enteric coated. Not anymore. Technology now makes it possible to effectively enteric coat gelatin capsules with a ph (alkaline) sensitive enteric coating. Thus enzyme formulations can be given all of the advantages of a capsule formulation with the protection of enzymes that was formerly only available in tablet form. Now enzymes in capsule form have the edge due to their rapid disintegration once they land in the targeted duodenum. Beware of the term "enteric coated". An enteric coating is a coating that is placed over the tablet (or capsule) to protect its contents. However, unless it says " pH sensitive" before the word enteric (coating) you may be getting a simple protein or even vegetable shellac coating. Protein coatings do work to a limited degree, but there is a possibility that the protein coating could be digested or partially digested by stomach acid, thus exposing enzymes to premature destruction. Sometimes, the protein coating survives the stomach, and unfortunately the duodenum as well, allowing the tablet/capsule to pass through the system undigested. Don't be deceived by the milligram scam! Traditionally, enzymes were listed in milligram doses only, which is how we used to list them. But that standard was set when there were fewer companies distributing enzymes and using raw materials with similar activity units. Now, there are many companies using different raw materials with different potencies. For example, you can find chymotrypsin that is 1,000 units per milligram in strength or 100 units per milligram (mg) in strength. Although listing enzymes in milligrams (mg) is still the standard, the milligrams actually mean NOTHING!! The activity units are what counts. If there are enzymes listed with no activity units, be VERY cautious. This is a way to deceive the general public who is not familiar with enzymes. For example, If someone decides to use 1 mg of chymotrypsin that is 1000 units per mg, they could technically list it as much as 1000 mg of chymotrypsin on the label and claim that it is 1 unit per milligram. The problem is, quite often they leave the activity units out because it exposes the product for what it is. It is permitted to list a higher milligram dose as long as you display the activity units in lower amounts. For example; 1 mg of 1000 units per milligram chymotrypsin can be displayed as 10 mg, but you have to display that the strength is only 100 units per mg, not 1000 units. Sometimes units are listed per gram, so be cautious when reading the label. It can be displayed at any milligram dosage as long as the activity units per mg are adjusted and listed. The chymotrypsin is an extremely potent pancreatic enzyme of which much has been written. Its activity is so great that most enzyme formulas (including those big name European-made ones) on the market only contain 1/2 to 1 milligram (500-1000 units).
